Ad hits Orman ‘House of Cards’ style

A new radio ad bashing Kansas independent Greg Orman as a pawn of the Democrats re-imagines the race through the lens of Netflix’s “House of Cards.”

The spot, paid for by the conservative Now or Never PAC, includes a narrator who sounds like Kevin Spacey’s character Frank Underwood on the popular show.

“When I hatched the plan for Greg Orman to replace a Democrat, I promised President Obama and Reid that nothing would blow back on them,” the narrator says in the ad, first released to National Journal.

“With the control of the United States Senate at stake, I simply could not leave this election for the voters to decide. So I took matters into my own hands, using whatever and whomever I had available.”

The Netflix show portrays a conniving House majority whip who manipulates his way up the Washington food chain. In this ad, fictional Rep. Underwood does the same to keep Democrats in control of the Senate.

“I have confused the voters of Kansas into thinking their candidate Orman is an independent,” he explains. “Make no mistake about it, once he’s elected, he belongs to me and President Obama.”

As Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) fights for his political life against Orman, Republicans are aggressively trying to tie Orman to the Democratic Party. Roberts was in much better shape before the Democratic candidate dropped out, but now the GOP is worried that a coalition of Democrats and centrists could topple Roberts and hurt the party’s chances of winning control the Senate.

The polls have narrowed, but most still show Orman with a slight lead.

This isn’t the first spot of the campaign season to borrow from “House of Cards.” Carl DeMaio (R-Calif.) posted ads inspired by the show on his Facebook account.
