A former Republican governor of Wisconsin on Tuesday pushed back against Ted Cruz’s claim that “a vote for John Kasich is a vote for Donald Trump.”

“I think a vote for Ted Cruz is actually a vote for Hillary Clinton,” Tommy Thompson said in an interview with CNN. “I don’t think Ted Cruz can beat Hillary Clinton, and that’s what I’m in it for.”

{mosads}Thompson, who served in the George W. Bush administration as Secretary of Health and Human Services, is the Wisconsin chairman of the Kasich campaign.

“I know John Kasich, head-to-head, is the best candidate the Republicans can put up in order to defeat Hillary Clinton,” he said.

“So therefore, if you vote for Ted Cruz, or for Donald Trump, You’re actually voting for Hillary Clinton.”

According to Real Clear Politics, Cruz and Trump are neck-and-neck in Wisconsin at around 30 percent with a week left until the state’s primary, while Kasich is averaging just 16 percent.
