South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) has denounced Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.

{mosads}”It defies everything that this country was based on and it’s just wrong,” Haley told reporters in Columbia, S.C., on Tuesday, calling Trump’s remarks “absolutely un-American” and “unconstitutional.”

Haley made the comment in a video posted to Twitter by her communications director a day after Trump held a campaign rally at the USS Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Hours before the rally Monday evening, Trump issued a press release calling for a “total and complete shutdown” on Muslims entering the U.S. amid stoked fears of terrorism.

Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as the White House and foreign leaders, widely condemned the remarks Tuesday, but Trump stood by them during interviews throughout the day.

Haley, the first woman to serve as governor of the early-voting state of South Carolina, has been mentioned as a potential vice presidential candidate for Republicans.
