Sanders: Trump offers a ‘false solution’
Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders late Wednesday said Republican primary front-runner Donald Trump offers a “false solution” to the problems ailing America.
{mosads}“People are working long hours for low wages, they’re people who are really worried about what’s going to happen to their kids,” Sanders said on CBS’s “Late Show.”
“But I think what they have done is respond to Trump’s false message, which suggests that is if we keep Muslims out of this country or if we keep scapegoating Latinos or Mexicans that somehow our country becomes better,” he added.
When asked by late-night host Stephen Colbert why the Vermont senator appeals to Trump supporters, Sanders said the businessman is tapping into the anger and resentment of the middle-class worker.
“People have a right to be angry,” He said. “We have a right to be angry when we are the only major country on Earth that doesn’t provide paid family and medical leave.”
“What we need to be is rational in figuring out how we address the problems and not simply scapegoating minorities,” he added.
On the heels of his resounding New Hampshire primary victory, Colbert offered Sanders some advice for how he might win in South Carolina, where he is trailing primary front-runner Hillary Clinton.
Colbert, who is from the Palmetto State, told Sanders he had to eat boiled peanuts and drink beer in order to win votes.
“And this wins in South Carolina?” Sanders asked, as he took a swig of beer.
“Yes, it does,” Colbert responded. “If you like boiled peanuts, it’ll certainly give you a leg up in South Carolina.”
