Romney records robocalls for Cruz in Utah, Arizona

Mitt Romney recorded robocalls for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz in Utah and Arizona, touting the Texas senator as the only candidate who could beat front-runner Donald Trump, The Daily Caller reported.

The robocalls began in Arizona on Monday and will drop in Utah on Tuesday. The Arizona primary and Utah caucuses are Tuesday. 

{mosads}In the recorded calls, the 2012 GOP nominee says that voting for GOP contender John Kasich is essentially “a vote for Donald Trump.”
“I’m calling to ask you to join me in supporting Ted Cruz for president this Tuesday in the Utah Republican caucuses,” he says in the call.

“This is the time for Republicans across the spectrum to unite behind Ted. He is the only Republican candidate who can defeat Donald Trump, and at this point a vote for John Kasich is a vote for Donald Trump.”

Romney says that Cruz has devoted his life to defending the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

“He’ll fight to bring back jobs to America and raise wages for everyone,” he said. 

“Ted will be a strong commander in chief who will keep America safe.”

 
Romney said at the end of the call that he’d be voting for Cruz in Utah on Tuesday and encouraged voters to do the same. He announced last week his plans to vote for the Texas senator in Utah.
 
“The only path that remains to nominate a Republican rather than Mr. Trump is to have an open convention. At this stage, the only way we can reach an open convention is for Senator Cruz to be successful in as many of the remaining nominating elections as possible,” Romney wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.
 
Cruz is polling ahead of Trump in Utah, according to a Y2 analytics survey. The poll shows Cruz with a 24-point lead, 53 percent to 29 percent. In Arizona, Trump leads Cruz by 13 points, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls.
 
Romney previously recorded robocalls for Kasich and Marco Rubio, who dropped out of the race earlier this month after losing his home state of Florida. In the recordings, Romney slammed Trump, saying he couldn’t beat Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton in a general election. He called on voters to choose a candidate who could beat Clinton.
 
Romney also previously campaigned for Kasich.
