Cruz: Attacks on spouses ‘disgusting’

GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz in an interview Sunday slammed Donald Trump’s attacks on the Texas senator’s wife, saying they have “no place in politics.”

Last week, the front-runner threatened to “spill the beans” on Cruz’s wife in response to an ad from an anti-Trump super-PAC that featured a photo of Trump’s wife, Melania, posing nude. Trump then shared a tweet the next day which included an image of his wife, a former model, and Cruz’s wife next to one another with the statement, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Cruz shot back at Trump and told him to leave his wife out of the campaign.

Cruz denied on Sunday knowing anything about the ad featuring Trump’s wife and called it “deplorable.”

“As soon as I saw it I denounced it and said it was wrong,” he said. “There are a whole lot of people in America who disagree with Donald Trump.”

Cruz said Trump used the ad as an excuse to go after his wife and attack her directly.

“I have never once said any negative word about Melania or any member of his family, and I don’t intend to,” Cruz said.

“Melania is a lovely woman. … She seems to be a terrific mother.”

When Trump gets scared, Cruz said, particularly regarding his foreign policy knowledge, he tries to find a way to change the subject.

He said Trump was so scared last week because he called “publicly for effectively withdrawing America from NATO.”

“Now that is a catastrophically foolish proposition,” Cruz said.

The day after, the Brussels terrorist attack occurred.

“He hasn’t campaigned for a week, he’s been hiding in Trump Tower, but late at night, he sends tweets attacking my wife, attacking Heidi,” Cruz said.

“It is inappropriate. It is wrong … and it is a sign of just how scared Donald is right now because he doesn’t want to discuss the substance.”
