Poll: 1 in 3 Wisconsin Republicans wouldn’t back Trump or Cruz in November
About one-third of Republican voters in Wisconsin say that if Donald Trump or Ted Cruz is their party’s nominee, they won’t back them in the general election, according to exit poll data published by NBC News.
If Cruz wins the nomination, only 65 percent said they would vote for him in November. Seven percent said they would vote for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, 18 percent said they would vote third-party, and six percent said they would not vote.
{mosads}Similarly, only 61 percent said they’d vote for Trump if he is the nominee. Ten percent said they’d vote for Clinton, while 16 percent for a third-party candidate. Nine percent said they would sit out the election.
Cruz, who won Wisconsin’s GOP primary Tuesday night with 48 percent support to Trump’s 35 percent, predicted after his victory that he’d make the state competitive in the general election.
“Let me tell you, I look forward to coming back in November and for the first time since 1984, painting the Badger State bright Republican red,” Cruz told Republicans in Wisconsin.
Clinton lost the Wisconsin Democratic primary on Tuesday to rival Bernie Sanders, 57 to 43 percent.
