Poll: Trump leads nationally with 40 percent support
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has 40 percent support among Republican primary voters, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Sen. Ted Cruz follows close behind with 35 percent, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich comes in third place with 24 percent support of GOP primary voters, according to the poll.
{mosads}Trump’s support is up 10 points from a March poll; in that snapshot Cruz had 27 percent and Kasich had 22 percent.
Trump leads Cruz among Republicans who don’t have a college education, 45 percent to 38 percent; and among men, 42 percent to 35 percent. Cruz has an advantage over Trump among very conservative voters, 52 percent to 40 percent, while Kasich leads among Republicans who say they are moderate or liberal.
According to the poll, 61 percent of Republican primary voters say they could see themselves supporting Trump, while 38 percent say they could not support Trump. For Cruz, 63 percent say they could support the Texas senator and 35 percent say they could not.
According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls nationally, Trump leads by 9.8 points, with 40.4 percent of the vote. Cruz has 30.6 percent support and Kasich has 21 percent support.
Among registered voters, nearly 70 percent say they could not see themselves supporting Trump and 65 percent of all voters have a negative view of Trump. For Cruz, 61 percent of respondents say they can’t see themselves supporting the Texas senator. Nearly 60 percent of polled voters say they could not see themselves supporting Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
The poll also finds that in a head-to-head match up between Trump and Clinton, Clinton leads Trump by 11 points. She leads Cruz by just 2 points, 46 percent to 44 percent. Bernie Sanders leads Cruz by 12 points, 52 percent to 40 percent, in a head-to-head matchup. Kasich leads Clinton by 12 points in a matchup.
The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted April 10-14 among 1,000 registered voters. The margin of error for the whole sample of registered voters was 3.1 percent. The sample of Republican primary voters included 310 people. The margin of error for Republican primary voters sample is 5.6 percent.
