Trump: Clinton knew Wasserman Schultz ‘rigged’ primary
Donald Trump on Monday chided Hillary Clinton for being “disloyal” to outgoing Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
{mosads}At a town hall in Roanoke, Va., with running mate Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump said Wasserman Schultz helped to “rig the system” for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee during the primary.
“Whether you like her or not, she worked very, very hard to rig the system. Little did she know that China, Russia — one of our many, many friends — came in and hacked the hell out of us,” he said.
“I always knew she was highly overrated,” Trump continued. “But she just got fired. They said, ‘Debbie, you’re fired.’ ”
The Republican presidential nominee also charged that Clinton “knew what was going on.”
“She knew everything that was going on. She knew it was a rigged system, that Bernie Sanders never had a chance.”
Trump’s comments came just as the Democratic National Convention was scheduled to gavel in for the first day of business — with Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the party’s secretary, taking Wasserman Schultz’s place.
“Debbie was totally loyal to Hillary Clinton, and she threw her under the bus within five seconds,” Trump added.
“I don’t want [Clinton] covering my back.”
The drama follows a rough Sunday for the Florida Democrat, who said she would step down as DNC head at the end of the convention in Philadelphia this week.
Her resignation stems from a WikiLeaks dump of 20,000 internal DNC emails last Friday, with some showing top officials seemingly working to undermine Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the primary.
Clinton’s campaign manager on Sunday questioned whether Russia may have been involved in the hack that stole the emails, though Trump on Monday called it laughable that Russia would aid his presidential campaign in such a way.
