Clinton taps Warren ally to sit on transition team

Hillary Clinton has tapped a progressive ally of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to serve on the Democratic presidential nominee’s transition team, according to Politico.

{mosads}Rohit Chopra, who served as the student loan ombudsman at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau when Warren was helming the agency, will be added to the team.

The move signals Clinton is trying to soothe discontent from progressive groups concerned that she picked former U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to lead the transition effort.

Salazar, a former Colorado senator, has expressed support for President Obama’s signature trade accord, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a position that puts him at odds with Clinton and many progressives who oppose the trade deal.

Her decision to bring on Chopra, who currently works as a special adviser at the U.S. Department of Education, also comes as she continues to campaign on policies surrounding higher education.

Last month, Clinton proposed a plan to eliminate college tuition for most families, a pinnacle of Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign.

Chopra didn’t respond to Politico’s request for comment at the time, and Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon said the campaign isn’t “confirming staffing at the transition.”
