Priebus: Clinton ‘not really good at politics’
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says that Hillary Clinton is “not really good at politics,” and that he hopes she becomes the Democratic nominee for president.
In a video posted online Monday, Priebus was asked about Clinton last week, saying, “Don’t let anybody tell you that, you know, it’s corporations and businesses that create jobs.”
{mosads}”She’s trying to be [Sen.] Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.],” Priebus said. “It’s pretty obvious, and she’s trying really hard. I don’t know if she was a little off-script on that particular moment but it clearly wasn’t natural and it was certainly awkward.”
He pointed to other gaffes from Clinton in the past few months, such as saying she was “dead broke” when she left the White House.
“You look at her book rollout — it was a disaster. She talks off the cuff; it doesn’t work. She makes one mistake after the next,” he said.
“Put yourself in my shoes,” he added. “And your job was you need to raise a lot of money, you need to recruit a lot of volunteers, and you need to unify the Republican Party, and you know that there’s a lot of opinion within our party. Those are your jobs, you’d want nothing more than Hillary Clinton to be the nominee of the Democrat Party.”
With the stumbles added to that opposition from Republicans, Priebus said in summation: “There’d be no one you would want more to run against than Hillary Clinton, and on top of it, she’s not really good at politics.”
As for Clinton’s comment about corporations, she did try to clean up the remark on Monday, saying she had “shorthanded” it last week and was talking about tax breaks.
Clinton made the remark at an event where she praised Warren, who is known for her tough rhetoric on Wall Street and could challenge the former secretary of State from the left.
Priebus said Warren could run, noting she is the “hottest commodity within the Democrat Party.”
“Hillary Clinton is a large figure politically in our system, but she doesn’t create the groundswell of enthusiasm on the Democratic side of the vote,” Priebus said. “If there’s something that the Democrats are lacking right now, it’s enthusiasm.”
