The Egyptian military said Friday that debris has been found from the EgyptAir passenger jet that disappeared from radar the day before while flying from Paris to Cairo with 66 passengers and crew on board.

{mosads}The Egyptian armed forces told EgyptAir that it had found initial debris from the missing Airbus A320 approximately 180 miles off the coastline, the airline said in a statement posted to its website and social media.

Egyptian Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Samir said in a statement posted to his Facebook that military planes and ships had found “personal belongings of the passengers” and plane debris, according to The New York Times.

It was thought on Thursday that debris had been found near the Greek island of Karpathos, though Greek officials later in the day said it wasn’t wreckage from EgyptAir Flight 804, and an airline official said on CNN that the search continued.

The White House reiterated Friday night that it doesn’t definitely know what caused the plane to disappear amid speculation that terrorism was responsible.
