Biden unsure if 2020 run ‘appropriate thing for me to do’

Former Vice President Joe Biden said in an interview to be released Tuesday he’s open to making a presidential run in 2020, but said he’s “not sure it’s the appropriate thing” to do. 

“We gotta turn this ship around. And I’d much prefer to be helping someone turn it around than being the guy trying to turn it around,” Biden said in an interview with Snapchat’s “Good Luck America,” according to The Associated Press, which was given a clip of the exchange.

Biden considered a run for president in 2016 but opted not to join the campaign, citing the death of his son, Beau, to cancer in 2015.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich was interviewed alongside Biden for the Snapchat piece. Kasich ran for the Republican nomination in 2016, losing out to President Trump. Kasich declined to address his plans for 2020.

“We’re both hoping that both our parties generate some real energetic people who have the depth and capacity to do it,” Biden said.

Biden has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration, saying last week that “phony nationalism” is tearing at the fabric of the country.

A report last week said the former vice president is edging closer to a presidential run and has said privately that he sees himself as the only Democrat who can defeat Trump in 2020.

Biden’s new memoir, “Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship and Purpose,” is set to be released Tuesday and details the former vice president’s struggle with his son’s death.

In the book, Biden writes that had he run for president in 2016, his campaign would have focused on helping the middle class, taking on Wall Street and developing a cure for cancer.
