A Chicago high school student was seen handcuffed and led away by police on Wednesday after she participated in the nationwide protests against gun violence.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that police handcuffed and detained a 16-year-old girl, accusing her of reckless conduct. The girl is a junior at Kenwood Academy, where hundreds of students took part in a national school walkout day to protest gun violence and school shootings.
Police said they took the girl into custody for reckless conduct after she walked out onto Lake Shore Drive and disrupted traffic — not specifically because of her participation in the walkout.
{mosads}Police later released the girl and said they would not be filing charges.
Students across Chicago marched to protest gun violence, with many speaking about how they’ve been affected by gun violence. Chicago police reported there were 650 homicides in the city in 2017, a decrease from the previous year.
President Trump has periodically pointed to Chicago as a hotbed of crime and evidence that restrictive gun laws don’t work, saying last summer that the city’s crime levels had reached “epidemic proportions.”
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D), who previously served as former President Obama’s chief of staff, has declared the city a “Trump-free zone.”
