Newt: Trump a ‘rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl’
Newt Gingrich on Tuesday evening said Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at times looks like a “rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl.”
“He’s clearly the front-runner; he hasn’t locked it up, but he’s the front-runner,” Gingrich said during an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox News.
{mosads}“He’s done a lot of things right, but he is also is a little bit like a rookie quarterback in the Super Bowl. This is the big leagues. It gets much tougher the longer it goes on, and he’s going to have to improve his game if he’s going to win in the end,” Gingrich said.
“We’ll see if he’s capable of doing it,” Gingrich continued. “I think he’s a very smart man, but I also think, you know, when you’ve been as successful as he has in business, in television, in books, it’s a little hard to change at this stage because all of those other things worked for so long.”
Gingrich had ripped Trump’s feud with rival Ted Cruz over the candidates’ wives on Twitter as “utterly stupid,” and he offered praise for the businessman for admitting that sharing an unflattering photo of Cruz’s wife, Heidi, compared to a glamour shot of his wife, Melania, was a “mistake.”
The former Speaker also weighed in on reports that Trump plans to give a series of policy speeches in the coming weeks, saying, “It’s the right thing to do. I wish he had done it about a month ago.”
