Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) dodged in a new interview when pressed on whether he believes presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump can win the general election.

“Do you think he can really win?” Politico’s Glenn Thrush asked Ryan in an interview published Monday.

“Yeah, sure, of course I do,” Ryan responded.

“I’m not gonna — I’m not a betting man,” Ryan added when pressed if he would bet his own money on a Trump victory.

{mosads}“I think if we get our party unified, and if we do the work we need to do to get ourselves at full strength, and if we offer the country a clear and compelling agenda that is inspiring, that is inclusive, that fixes problems, that is solutions-based and based on good principles, then, yes, I think we can win.”
The Speaker, who earlier this month met with Trump after saying he wasn’t yet ready to endorse the presumptive Republican nominee, indicated he will continue calling out the businessman, telling Politico, “I’ve done that in the past, and I will do that in future if need be, and I hope it’s not necessary.”

Ryan has previously condemned Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from the U.S., swiped at the businessman for not forcefully disavowing support from a former Ku Klux Klan leader and called on Trump during the primary to control violence at his rallies.

“I feel that I can play a role in unifying. I don’t want to see our party divided,” Ryan said elsewhere in the interview. “The people in the primaries are speaking.”

“When people go to the polls in November, they are not just picking a person … they’re also picking a path,” Ryan said.

“I think this is a ‘we,’ not just one person,” he said. “I very much believe in a type and style of politics that may not be in vogue today but, I still think, nevertheless, is the right kind of politics.”
