MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough early Wednesday accused presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump of using Hillary Clinton as a “blank check to say racist things.”
“Hey Donald, guess what? I’m not gonna support you until you get your act together. You’re acting like a bush-league loser. You’re acting like a racist. You’re acting like a bigot,” Scarborough said on the program.
{mosads}The MSNBC host has pushed Republican leaders this week to walk back their endorsement of Trump in an effort to force the billionaire to back off racially charged rhetoric, including attacking a federal judge’s Mexican heritage.
At least one GOP lawmaker, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), who is in a tough reelection battle against Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), has announced he will reverse course and not back Trump. Scarborough on Wednesday outlined what other Republicans could say.
“This is called ‘art of the deal.’ I’m taking my deal off the table, Donald, until you come back to the table and get on the other side of the table and prove to me that you’re not a bigot and prove to me that you’re not gonna take my party down in the ditch,” Scarborough said.
“You don’t have my endorsement and you can’t use Hillary Clinton as a gun against my head,” the former GOP congressman continued. “I’m not scared of you, and I’m not scared of the base because they’re just as pissed off as me.”
Scarborough said Wednesday that Trump is “making every Republican pay a price that is too high,” predicting big political losses should the businessman not shift course for the general election.
“When is there going to be a Republican in Washington, D.C., who is going to make Donald Trump pay a price?” he asked.
Trump released a lengthy statement Tuesday saying his comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, an Indiana-born judge whose parents are Mexican immigrants, had been “misconstrued.” They sparked an uproar from Republicans and Democrats who said his comments claiming the judge was biased in overseeing lawsuits against Trump University because of his heritage were racist.
