Trump offers Orlando-tied campaign slogan

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump released a slightly different version of his “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan on Monday, after the massacre at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla., over the weekend.

“Make America Safe Again!” blared the title of a fundraising email Trump sent to his followers one day after 49 people were shot and killed at a gay nightclub, with dozens more injured.

{mosads}Trump told supporters that he will “protect and defend all Americans” as president, an email pledge that came hours after he attacked President Obama as clueless on battling terrorism.

“We will not stand by and allow another tragedy like this to happen. We are going to make America safe again and great again for everyone,” Trump added in his email.

Trump used similar language in December, following the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., when he announced his controversial proposal to ban Muslims from entering the U.S.

Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton were slated to deliver dueling addresses Monday afternoon as the threat of terrorism re-emerges as a narrative in the presidential race following the Orlando attack.

Clinton has renewed her call for stricter gun control, saying the U.S. should move to curb access to “weapons of war.”

“I’m going to be as firm and strong and single-minded in going after [the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria] as anybody could be … but I also want to save lives from gun violence more broadly as well,” Clinton said on CNN.

President Obama said Monday the shooting that left 50 people dead and 53 injured appears to be a case of “homegrown extremism,” with no clear evidence that it was directed by a foreign terror group.

The mass shooting, the deadliest in United States history, is being investigated as an act of terrorism, but FBI Director James Comey and other administration officials say they do not believe it was directed by a foreign terrorism group or that the suspect was part of a network operating in the U.S.
