Pentagon preps security for Sochi as terrorist threat intensifies

The United States has offered to aid the Russian government in security preparations for the Sochi Olympic Games, the Pentagon announced Monday. 

“To that end, U.S. commanders in the region are conducting prudent planning and preparations should that support be required,” Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John F. Kirby said in a statement. 

Kirby said two U.S. Navy ships stationed in the Black Sea will be available if requested “for all manner of contingencies in support of — and in consultation with — the Russian government.” 

{mosads}There is no requirement, however, at this time, he clarified.

The Pentagon’s announcement came the same day a video was released showing two men wearing explosive belts and warning Russia to expect a “present” at the Olympics. 

Russian security officials, meanwhile, are searching for as many as four “black widows,” according to NBC News. They are considered young female suicide bombers who have been dispatched to interrupt the Olympic Games. 

NBC News reports the four Muslim women are from the Russian Caucasus, which has been a hotbed for terrorist activity.

The Olympics start in just two weeks, on Feb. 8.
