Israel team to meet with US on final Iran deal

Israel’s national security adviser is heading to Washington for talks with the Obama administration on the next nuclear deal that will be negotiated with Iran in the coming months.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that he was sending a team led by National Security Adviser Yossi Cohen to Washington for the talks about the more permanent deal that will follow the interim agreement struck this past weekend.

We agreed that in the coming days an Israeli team led by the national security adviser, Yossi Cohen, will go out to discuss with the United States the permanent accord with Iran,” Netanyahu said in remarks to members of his Likud party, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Netanyahu blasted the deal that the six world powers reached with Iran, where Iran agreed to curb its nuclear activity for some sanctions relief.

The Israeli prime minister on Sunday called the agreement a “historic mistake,” after Israeli officials had mounted a lobbying campaign against the deal.

“This agreement has made the world a much more dangerous place,” Netanyahu said.

The six-month agreement struck limits Iran’s uranium enrichment, increases inspections of its nuclear facilities and stops construction on a heavy-water reactor that could be used to produce plutonium. In exchange, Iran is receiving as much as $7 billion in sanctions relief.

The interim deal is designed to pave the way for a more permanent agreement on Iran’s nuclear program that would ensure Tehran does not produce nuclear weapons.
