Iran’s supreme leader: US ‘lying’ about deal

Iran’s supreme leader slammed the United States on Thursday, suggesting the White House is being dishonest about the terms of a framework deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cited a four-page fact sheet from the White House about the agreement as an example of negotiators “lying [and] breaching promises,” in a tweet from his English language account.

Khamenei, who has the final say on whether Iran will accept a deal, said “most” of the fact sheet “was contrary to what was agreed.”

{mosads}So far, the top Iranian leader hasn’t endorsed the framework deal reached earlier this month. Negotiators have until June 30 to reach a final deal.

Khamenei tweeted that nothing so far “secures” the terms of a final agreement.

Iranian officials have repeatedly said they want sanctions lifted immediately as part of a final deal. Khamenei added Thursday that inspections that would place Iran under “special monitoring” aren’t acceptable.

For now, Khamenei said, he reserving judgment on the process. But he warned a “disloyal side” may “stab Iran in the back.”

The tweets appeared to be from a speech he gave Thursday, the first time he spoken publicly about the nuclear talks since the framework was announced.

His remarks come ahead of a Foreign Relations Committee vote Tuesday on legislation that would empower Congress to review the final agreement.

Iranian and U.S. officials have warned that if legislation passes before June 30 it could jeopardize the talks, and the White House and liberal groups are pressing Democrats to oppose the measure.
