House Dems wager on LA vs. NY baseball series
Two of the biggest baseball fans in Congress are putting their money where their mouths are this October.
With the Los Angeles Dodgers matched up against the New York Mets in the first round of the MLB playoffs, Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) are holding a friendly bet on the outcome of the five-game series.
The bet? Well, it’s not quite peanuts and cracker jacks.
{mosads}Schiff, a Dodgers fan, is wagering gourmet popcorn from Pauline’s Premier Sweets in Burbank, Calif. Israel, a Mets fan, is offering up fresh New York bagels.
The loser will also wear a tie featuring the winner’s team while delivering a congratulatory speech “extolling their virtues” on the House floor.
“I hope that Adam will also consider sending a broom so that I can sweep his fancy L.A. popcorn off my floor in the same way my beloved Mets will sweep the Dodgers,” Israel declared.
“There isn’t any question in my mind that the Boys in Blue will best the Loveable Losers, and I can already taste the delicious New York bagels that will be flown in the day the Mets blow it,” Schiff responded.
The Mets beat the Dodgers the last time they met in the playoffs, in 2006.
