Trump: ‘Leave Tom Brady alone!’
Donald Trump has a message for the NFL: “Leave Tom Brady alone!”
The GOP presidential front-runner came to the defense of the embattled New England Patriots quarterback Friday night during a news conference in Boston, calling Brady “a very good friend of mine.”
{mosads}“Tom Brady is an honest guy, he’s a great guy, he’s a great champion and winner,” Trump said.
He also called Brady, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick “real winners.”
Brady is currently fighting a four-game suspension after the NFL determined that he was involved in tampering with the air pressure of game-used footballs.
He is hoping a judge will overturn at least part of the suspension, which starts in just weeks when the new NFL season begins.
Trump had previously used Brady’s “Deflate-gate” scandal to needle Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton, writing: “If Hillary doesn’t have to produce Emails, why should Tom? Very unfair!”
Political figures of all stripes have weighed in on Brady’s suspension.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, also a GOP presidential candidate, called the controversy “overblown.” And Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) noted that as a Miami Dolphins fan, he hopes Brady retires soon.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also slammed the NFL for suspending Brady, saying they should instead focus on changing the “racist” Washington Redskins team name.
Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) tweeted his support for the #FreeBrady movement in May.
