President-elect Donald Trump weighed in on a pair of college football teams Saturday when attending the Army-Navy game.
“I mean, I don’t know if it’s necessarily the best football, but it’s very good,” Trump told sportscasters when he stopped by the CBS booth partway through the game.
“But boy do they have spirit, more than anybody, it’s beautiful,” he added.
The president-elect spent first half of the game seated on the Navy side of the field and the second half on the Army side.
Trump was accompanied to the game by several aides and advisers, including incoming White House chief strategist Steve Bannon and incoming national security adviser retired Gen. Michael Flynn, according to pool reports.
Rudy Giuliani was also among those accompanying Trump to the game. The former New York City mayor on Friday confirmed he was out of the running to be Trump’s pick for secretary of State.
During his appearance in the CBS booth Saturday, Trump jokingly promised to nominate longtime sports commentator Verne Lundquist to be his ambassador to Sweden.
“You can’t do better than this,” Trump said of Lundquist. “I’d do that in a heartbeat.”
The game is Lundquist’s last as a sportscaster after more than 40 years doing play-by-play commentary.
Trump also praised the cadets and midshipmen playing in the game Saturday, saying, “I just love the Armed Forces.”
“It is humbling, it’s a great honor but it’s a great responsibility, and when you see these incredible people — we just want to be strong, and they want to be strong,” he said when asked how he feels knowing he would soon be their commander in chief.
“You don’t see this kind of spirit anywhere,” he said.
