White House condemns chemical attack in Syria
The White House on Tuesday condemned a deadly gas attack allegedly carried out by the Syrian government.
“Today’s chemical attack in Syria against innocent people, including women and children, is reprehensible,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters. “The United States stands with our allies across the globe to condemn this intolerable act.”
Spicer also took a shot at the Obama administration, describing the strike as a “consequence of the past administration’s weakness and irresolution.”
{mosads}The spokesman pointed out that Obama drew a “red line” in 2012 against Assad’s chemical weapons, but said he “did nothing.”
Tuesday’s suspected chemical weapons attack reportedly killed at least 58 people, including 11 children, in a rebel-held area of Syria.
The Syrian military has denied using chemical weapons, according to Reuters.
Spicer said it’s in the best “the best interests of the Syrian people” for Assad to step down, but would not say whether the U.S. government would take direct action to respond to the attack.
