Trump hails ‘excellent’ meeting with Schumer on shutdown
President Trump declared Friday he made progress toward averting a government shutdown after an “excellent” meeting with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) at the White House.
“Excellent preliminary meeting in Oval with @SenSchumer — working on solutions for Security and our great Military together with @SenateMajLdr McConnell and @SpeakerRyan,” Trump tweeted.
“Making progress – four week extension would be best!” the president added.

Schumer emerged from the meeting, however, singing a different tune.
The Democratic leader said there are a “good number of disagreements” with Trump on immigration and spending, even as they made progress toward an agreement.
Congress is running out of time to reach an agreement to fund the government. A shutdown will begin if lawmakers do not pass a spending measure by midnight.
Trump has spent much of the day on the phone with congressional leaders.
After meeting with Schumer, Trump spoke with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) by phone.
