The Trump Foundation is reportedly under investigation in New York for possibly violating state tax laws.

Two unidentified officials in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) office said the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance inquiry could uncover criminal activity, according to a Wednesday New York Times report.

However, they declined to say when the probe started and what Trump Foundation activities are specifically under investigation, the Times noted.

According to the newspaper, the probe may be linked to the lawsuit New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood (D) filed last month.

The lawsuit, filed against Trump, the Trump Foundation and members of the Trump family, alleges that Trump illegally used the foundation to support his 2016 presidential bid and that the charity illegally donated more than $2.8 million to that campaign.

Underwood seeks to dissolve the Trump Foundation with the lawsuit and recover millions in restitution, the Times noted. It also seeks to temporarily ban Trump and his three eldest children — Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka — from holding leadership positions at any New York nonprofit.
