Trump: Mueller makes Joseph McCarthy look like a ‘baby’

President Trump on Sunday compared special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation to former Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s (R-Wis.) search for communists in the U.S. government in the 1950s.

“Study the late Joseph McCarthy, because we are now in period with Mueller and his gang that make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby!” the president tweeted. “Rigged Witch Hunt!”

{mosads}The tweet came amid a flurry of tweets early Sunday criticizing The New York Times for a report that Trump said implied White House counsel Don McGahn must be a “John Dean type ‘RAT.’ ”

The Times reported that McGahn had grown concerned that Trump was preparing to set him up for a fall over the issue of possible obstruction of justice, and gave more than 30 hours of testimony to investigators.

“So many lives have been ruined over nothing – McCarthyism at its WORST!” Trump said in one of those tweets, referring to the special counsel’s investigation into Russia’s election meddling and possible collusion between the president’s campaign and Moscow.

Trump often labels the Mueller investigation a “witch hunt” and has called for it to conclude. 

On Sunday, he also again suggested that investigators turn their focus to former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
