Conservative activist Brent Bozell on Monday strongly opposed any serious consideration by President-elect Donald Trump of Mitt Romney for secretary of State.

Bozell warned that considering Romney would be an insult to Trump’s supporters.

{mosads}”The very idea of Mitt Romney as Secretary of State — or any other cabinet position in a Trump administration — is a slap to his supporters,” Bozell, chairman of ForAmerica, said in a statement.

“Plenty of people (myself included) opposed the President-elect, but virtually all endorsed him once he was the nominee. Not so with Romney and the GOP elites.”

Bozell said Romney, who was a strong critic of Trump during his presidential campaign, led the charge against the president-elect.

“I understand the business about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer, but this isn’t the movies,” he said in the statement.

“Romney personifies everything that’s wrong about the establishment. He has no respect for Trump and even less for his supporters. Should Trump select Romney, many of his supporters will wonder what respect Trump had for them, too.”

The president-elect has been facing backlash from some of his supporters over his consideration of Romney to serve in his administration.

Top Trump aide Kellyanne Conway on Sunday blasted Romney and questioned whether he would loyal if he did serve as secretary of State.

“I’m all for party unity, but I’m not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of State position,” Conway said.

She also said she had received feedback from people who say they would feel “betrayed” if Trump nominated Romney to serve in his administration.

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that Trump’s supporters would be “enormously disappointed” if the president-elect chose Romney for the post.
