Poll: Dems lead GOP by 9 points on generic House ballot

Democrats have a small edge on Republicans ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, according to a new poll that compared parties but not specific candidates.

Democrats emerged victorious by 9 points on a generic ballot in a poll of United States adults in the CNN/ORC survey released Friday.

Fifty percent said they would vote for a Democrat in their district compared with 41 percent who would back a Republican. 

{mosads}Pollsters also found that President Trump could weigh down fellow Republicans campaigning for the House.

Fifty-five percent said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who opposes Trump, whereas 41 percent would prefer a Trump supporter. 

The poll also found views about Trump remain more negative than positive: 53 percent saw Trump unfavorably, and 45 percent saw him favorably. 

Democrats need to flip at least 25 seats to take control of the House. Historically, a president’s party loses seats in the midterm following a presidential election. 

CNN/ORC conducted the survey of 1,009 U.S. adults via telephone interviews from April 22 to 25. It has a 3 percentage point margin of error.
