Comedian Bill Maher said on his Friday night HBO program that he is hoping for a recession if it means getting rid of President Trump.

“I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point,” the host said on his weekly program, “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

“By the way, I’m hoping for it because one way you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy. So please, bring on the recession,” he added.

“Sorry if that hurts people but it’s either root for a recession or you lose your democracy,” Maher said.

The host quickly received blowback on Twitter, with many conservatives arguing that Maher’s net worth would make a recession less impactful on him personally.
Maher makes $10 million annually to host “Real Time,” according to the website Celebrity Net Worth. He is one of cable’s most outspoken critics of the president.

His HBO contract was extended in 2017 to run through 2020.
