Corker: I won’t support Trump for election again

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said on Tuesday that he wouldn’t support President Trump in another election, saying Trump is “unable to rise to the occasion.”

“Let’s just put it this way: I would not do that again. … I think [Trump’s] proven himself unable to rise to the occasion,” Corker told CNN, asked if he regretted supporting him in the 2016 presidential race.

{mosads}Corker’s comments are the latest in a growing spat between the GOP senator and Trump that comes hours before the president is scheduled to visit Capitol Hill to meet with the Senate GOP conference.

Trump lashed out at Corker via Twitter earlier Tuesday morning, saying that he “helped President [Obama] give us the bad Iran Deal & couldn’t get elected dog catcher in Tennessee, is now fighting Tax Cuts.”

Corker told CNN that “everything [Trump] said today was absolutely untrue.”

“I don’t know why he lowers himself to such a low low standard and debases our country in the way that he does, but he does,” Corker said. “I think the debasing of our nation … will be what he’ll be remembered most for.”

Pressed if he thought Trump was a liar, Corker added: “The president has great difficulty with the truth on many issues.”
