Senate Intel member: ‘Premature’ to say Russia investigation reached conclusion

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) on Sunday refuted President Trump’s claim earlier in the week that it’s “commonly agreed” he didn’t collude with Russia.

“It’s certainly not commonly agreed in our committee, and we’re the ones doing the investigation. So I don’t think he has any basis for that statement,” King told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

King sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting an investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election as well as alleged collusion between Trump and the Kremlin. The Senate Judiciary Committee is conducting a separate investigation into the election.

“There’s a lot of work to be done, a lot of leads to be followed, a lot of witnesses to be interviewed, and it’s way premature to say some kind of conclusion has been reached,” King said.

A federal grand jury has approved the first charges in special counsel Mueller’s investigation into Russian intereference in the election, CNN reported Friday. Those charged could be taken into custody as soon as Monday, though it’s unclear what the charges are as they are sealed until then.
