Hackers infected DC police cameras before inauguration

Hackers infected police surveillance cameras in Washington, D.C., eight days before President Trump’s inauguration, authorities revealed Friday.

Ransomware affected 123 of the city’s 187 network video recorders, city officials said, according to the Washington Post. As a result of the attack, the infected cameras were unable to record between Jan. 12 and Jan. 15.

{mosads}Washington’s Chief Technology Officer Archana Vemulapalli said the issue was solved by manually removing software from each infected device and restarting the system.

According to the Post, Vemulapalli said that the city paid no ransom and that the malware did not spread further into the city’s computer system.

Secret Service spokesman Brian Ebert said that the attack did not jeopardize public safety.

While city officials maintained that the hacking effort appeared to be “localized,” they declined to indicate who was suspected for the attack, the report noted.
