2014 was the hottest year on record

2014 was the hottest year ever recorded, according to new federal data.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA said on Friday that the planet’s average global temperature last year ranked as the warmest since 1880.

{mosads}That means 2014 was the hottest year on earth in the last 134 years, surpassing 2005 and 2010 records. 

“This is the latest in a series of warm years, in a series of warm decades. While the ranking of individual years can be affected by chaotic weather patterns, the long-term trends are attributable to drivers of climate change that right now are dominated by human emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute of Space Studies.  

The 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000 with 1998 being the one outlier, according to NASA and NOAA.

In the past century, the earth’s average surface temperature has increased by roughly 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit and scientists predict the planet is on a path to see temperatures rise by a few more degrees over the next 100 years.
