Second secretly recorded Planned Parenthood video fuels storm

A second secretly recorded video released by an anti-abortion rights group appears to show an official from Planned Parenthood negotiating prices for selling fetal tissue.

The new video from the Center for Medical Progress highlights a discussion between a woman posing as a buyer of human tissue, who is recording the video, and a woman the group identifies as Dr. Mary Gatter, a Planned Parenthood official.

{mosads}In the video, Gatter refers to using a “less crunchy” technique to keep more fetal parts in tact, and asks the prospective buyer to suggest a price for the tissue.

At one point, during the negotiations over the compensation amount, Gatter jokes “I want a Lamborghini” and laughs.

Planned Parenthood said they could not confirm the authenticity of the latest video, but argued that the group heavily edits its footage to take statements out of context.

“These videos are part of a decade-long campaign of deceiving the public, making false charges, and terrorizing women and their doctors, all in order to ban abortion and cut women off from care at Planned Parenthood,” said Eric Ferrero, Planned Parenthood’s vice president of communication

Planned Parenthood had said it was expecting more of the heavily edited, secretly recorded videos to surface as part of the “smear campaign.” Officials have strongly argued that the nonprofit health organization follows the law and is not profiting from any sales but rather is being compensated for expenses.

The Center for Medical Progress and other opponents say the two videos suggest Planned Parenthood is profiting off the sale of fetal organs.

The first video, which was released last week and has been seen more than 2 million times online, set off a storm on Capitol Hill.

Republicans have blasted the group, and two panels are conducting investigations. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has vowed to seek to defund Planned Parenthood through amendments that could be offered to a federal highway funding bill.

In the new video, Gatter repeatedly asks the woman posing as the buyer to suggest a price for the tissue. However, she later says that Planned Parenthood is not looking to profit from the sale of human tissue.

“We don’t want to be in the position of being accused of selling tissue and stuff like that,” she says. “On the other hand, there are costs associated with the use of our space, and all that kind of stuff.”

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards previously apologized for the “tone” in the first video that came out but has otherwise strongly defended the group’s work.

Planned Parenthood wrote a letter to Congress on Monday calling the videos part of a pattern of “illegal harassment” and saying that more videos were likely to surface.

Democrats have largely refrained from criticizing the group.
