North Korea claims it has destroyed nuclear testing site
North Korea on Thursday claimed it destroyed its nuclear testing site, including a series of nuclear tunnels, ahead of Kim Jong Un’s meeting with President Trump next month.
CNN reports that North Korea demolished tunnel at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site along with observation buildings, a metal foundry and living quarters.
{mosads}There were reportedly four tunnels at the site, but journalists only saw the destruction of three.
Officials said the fourth tunnel was previously shut down.
A select group of journalists was invited to witness the demolition, which took place in a northern part of the country.
The news media spent a total of 10 hours at the site.
Pyongyang said it extended invitations to the news media in an effort to “ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test.”
U.S. officials are set to meet with North Korea’s representatives in the coming days about planning for the summit, which has been thrown into doubt by comments from Trump and Kim.
Trump said on Wednesday he will decide next week whether to go along with plans to meet with Kim next month in Singapore.
“We will know next week about Singapore,” Trump said.
