Kudlow: Trudeau ‘overreacting’ to tariffs

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Sunday said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is “overreacting” to the Trump administration’s decision to impose steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada.

“To say that this is an attack on Canada is not right,” Kudlow told “Fox News Sunday.”

{mosads}“I think he’s overreacting. I don’t want to get into the middle of that.”

Trudeau last week slammed the Trump administration’s decision, calling the tariffs an “affront” to the historic alliance between the two nations.

“Let me be clear: These tariffs are totally unacceptable,” Trudeau said Thursday.

“Canadians have served alongside Americans in two world wars and in Korea. From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan, we have fought and died together.”

Kudlow, who is the president’s top economic adviser, said the friendship between the United States and Canada has nothing to do with the tariffs. 

“I don’t think our tariffs are anything to do with our friendship and long-standing alliance with Canada,” Kudlow said Sunday.

“This is a trade dispute, if you will. It can be resolved, if people work together.”

Kudlow said the Trump administration is not yet “satisfied” that trade loopholes “have been closed.”
