Flynn deputy K.T. McFarland to remain in role
Deputy national security adviser K.T. McFarland says she will remain in her current post at the request of President Trump, despite Michael Flynn’s resignation Monday night.
The New York Times reported Tuesday morning that McFarland was expected to leave her role amid the fallout from the former national security adviser’s resignation.
But McFarland told The Hill in a Tuesday afternoon statement that she’ll remain a part of the administration.
{mosads}”I just met with the president and he asked that I stay on. I’m thrilled to do so,” she said.
Flynn stepped aside Monday evening amid reports the he misled Trump transition and administration officials, including Vice President Pence, about the subject of a December conversation he had with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. before Trump was sworn in.
He initially denied reports that he spoke with the ambassador about new sanctions levied by former President Obama’s outgoing administration.
But this week, amid mounting reports contesting that characterization, Flynn admitted that he “inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information.”
McFarland remains the No. 2 on the National Security Counsel, which advises the president on major security issues. She’s a former Fox News analyst who served in the Defense Department under President Reagan.
