Facebook adopts $15 minimum wage
Facebook will start requiring that some of its contractors pay employees at least $15 an hour and give them additional benefits, the company said late Tuesday.
COO Sheryl Sandberg said that contractors and vendors who do a “substantial amount of work” for Facebook would need to abide by the new standards.
In addition to the new minimum wage, contractor employees will be entitled to at least 15 paid days off and a $4,000 “new child benefit” if their company does not offer paid parental leave.
{mosads}”This will give both women and men the flexibility to take paid parental leave, an important step for stronger families and healthier children,” Sandberg said in a post on the company’s blog.
The standards will apply to employees who do “substantial” business with the social network and work for U.S.-based companies. The companies will only be subject to the standards if they have more than 25 employees doing work for Facebook.
Sandberg has been an outspoken voice for policies that make it easier for women to engage in the workplace.
The company’s announcement is part of a larger national debate over whether to raise the minimum wage.
