Equifax breach exposed driver’s license data for nearly 11M Americans: report

The Equifax breach that was revealed last month exposed driver’s license data for around 10.9 million people, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Equifax had said that driver’s license information had been taken in some cases as part of the breach, which compromised personal information for 145.5 million people, but the exact number was not disclosed.

The hack compromised Social Security numbers, credit card information and addresses for millions of Americans. That information could make it easier to steal identities.

Former Equifax CEO Richard Smith told Congress earlier this month that the breach occurred as a result of human and technological error.

Smith testified that an employee had failed to ensure that a software vulnerability was patched and that a scanning program later failed to detect the weakness.

Lawmakers are still exploring how to respond to the breach, with growing bipartisan support for a federal law requiring companies to notify consumers directly if their data has been compromised.
