Airlines canceled 12K flights during blizzard

Airlines reportedly canceled more than 12,000 flights during the blizzard that pounded Washington, D.C., and points northeast over the weekend.

The website FlightAware.com said 12,235 flights were canceled between Friday and Monday because of the storm, which was dubbed Winter Storm Jonas. The blizzard dumped as much as two feet of snow on the nation’s capital and surrounding areas.

Another 12,219 flights were delayed between Saturday and Monday, according to the website. 

{mosads}Airlines have said they are trying to restore service to airports in the Northeast as quickly as possible.

“Tomorrow, additional employees from Chicago and Houston will be headed to EWR and IAD to lend a helping hand to get you on your way,” the company continued in a subsequent tweet. 

The leading airport for cancellations on Monday was Newark, N.J.’s Liberty International Airport, which had 247 outgoing and 191 inbound flights canceled. 

New York’s LaGuardia Airport, Washington’s Dulles International and Ronald Reagan National airports and Baltimore’s Thurgood Marshall International rounded out the top five on the outgoing flight cancellation list on Monday.
