Prosecutors rest their case against Manafort
Prosecutors in the criminal case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort rested their case on Monday, according to multiple media reports.
Manafort has been charged with 18 criminal counts of tax and bank fraud, which includes failing to report overseas accounts. Federal prosecutors on special counsel Robert Mueller’s team have spent the past two weeks trying to convince a 12-member jury that Manafort hid money he earned working as a political consultant for pro-Russia Ukraine officials from the IRS in foreign bank accounts.
Prosecutors finished questioning their final witness just after 5 p.m. on Monday, the 10th day of the trial, The Washington Post reported.
Defense attorneys in a procedural hearing that followed asked for the charges against Manafort to be thrown out, arguing the evidence presented by prosecutors lacked “materiality” and failed “to show the necessary willfulness,” according to the Post. But Judge T.S. Ellis III sealed the courtroom without ruling on their request.
