Court blocks proof-of-citizenship to vote in 3 states

The nation’s second-most-powerful court on Monday blocked a federal election commission’s move to approve proof-of-citizenship requirements when registering to vote in Alabama, Georgia and Kansas.

Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 to overturn last year’s district court’s decision to deny a request from two voting rights organizations for a preliminary injunction against the United States Election Assistance Commission’s decision, which was authorized by Executive Director Brian Newby in January 2015.

In the court’s majority opinion, Judge Judith Rogers said the new voting obstacle “unquestionably” makes it more difficult for the League of Women Voters to accomplish its primary mission of registering voters.

“And that harm is irreparable because after the registration deadlines for the November election pass, there can be no do over and no redress,” she said.
