Trump campaigned in 2016 on a pledge to leave the Paris Climate Accords. In November 2020, the U.S. officially pulled out of the landmark climate deal that set emissions goals. It rejoined under President Biden.

Trump has said called for the U.S. to “drill, baby, drill.” He has mocked the use of wind turbines and called Biden’s push toward electric vehicles “madness.”

The EPA rolled back many regulations during Trump’s presidency, reversing rules on waste from coal-fired power plants, fuel-efficiency standards and protections for certain bodies of water.

Trump faced criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, as he refused to wear a mask in public, pushed unproven treatments and clashed with public health officials. But he did oversee the rapid development of effective vaccines.

Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2017, which slashed the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent and lowered individual tax rates. The individual tax cuts expire in 2025.

Trump oversaw the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the new version of which was dubbed the “USMCA” for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump engaged in a trade war with China and other nations, frequently slapping tariffs on other countries' products. He has backed a 10 percent tariff on foreign imports.

Trump touts the strength of the economy before the pandemic, when the unemployment rate fell to less than 4 percent and inflation was at 1 percent. The Dow also surpassed 30,000 points for the first time in November 2020.

The federal deficit increased by roughly $7.8 trillion during Trump’s four years in office.

Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, ending the Obama-era agreement that had given Tehran sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear development program.

The former president campaigned in 2016 on building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and he has said he will finish building the wall in a second term.

Trump frequently criticized other NATO allies for not contributing more to defense spending, and some former advisers have said he would withdraw from the alliance in a second term.

Trump was often cozy with dictators during his first term, meeting multiple times in person with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as well as praising Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The former president brokered a 2020 deal with the Taliban that laid out a plan for the full U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Biden officials argue they were boxed in by the agreement ahead of the chaotic 2021 pull out.
