OVERNIGHT CAMPAIGN: Immigration debate heats up

POLL POSITION:

President Obama is clinging to a narrow national lead in his presidential match-up against Mitt Romney, according to a new poll by The Associated Press. The president leads Romney 47-44 percent in the survey, although that advantage is within the poll’s margin of error.

A new poll of the crucial swing state of Florida shows Obama has opened up a 4-point lead over Romney, 46-42 percent, according to the Quinnipiac University survey.

Obama and Romney are statistically tied in Michigan, according to a poll from Mitchell Research, at 47 percent to 46.  

AD WATCH:

President Obama‘s reelection team continued its push for female voters with the release of a new TV ad touting the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as the first bill signed by the president after his inauguration. 

BATTLE FOR THE HOUSE:

New York: Sen. Charles Schumer (R-N.Y.) has endorsed New York state Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D) over Charles Barron (D), the controversial New York City councilman and former Black Panther who has union backing in the race.

Utah: Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) will skip the Democratic National Convention, making him the latest in a string of conservative Democrats to take a pass on the party confab.

SENATE SHOWDOWN:

Indiana: Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock‘s (R) campaign posted four videos meant to be responses to the Supreme Court ruling on Democrats’ healthcare law — except the court hasn’t announced its ruling yet.

Massachusetts: Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) have agreed to a third televised debate after a week of public bickering over the terms of the forums.

New Mexico: The League of Conservation Voters launched a $150,000 television ad campaign against GOP candidate Heather Wilson. It’s part of their $1 million ad push against her.

Virginia: Former Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) is up with his first ads — soft positive spots that indicate he needs to improve his standing with suburban female voters.

Wisconsin: Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) is up with her first ad of the campaign, a spot that blasts China for unfair trade practices and touts her work across the aisle to try to stop them.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Priorities USA, a super-PAC supporting President Obama’s reelection bid, increased its fundraising pace in May, hauling in roughly $4 million, according to recent filings.

Vice President Biden recruited major stars representing a variety of sports to appear in a new public service announcement released Thursday. Biden, Obama, quarterback Eli Manning, basketball star Jeremy Lin, baseball’s Jimmy Rollins, Evan Longoria and Joe Torre, soccer star David Beckham and ESPN sports analyst Andy Katz all appear in the PSA condemning violence against women.

Mitt Romney‘s five sons, Ben, Tagg, Matt, Josh and Craig, hit TBS’s “Conan” Wednesday and shed some light on their dad’s moon-walking and singing skills.

Romney’s presidential campaign wants to add a million fans next month on Facebook. Achieving that number would still put Romney, who currently has 2,006,468 “likes” or fans, well behind Obama, who has 27,073,939 “likes” on the social network.

Gov. Rick Scott (R) denied Romney’s campaign asked him to tone down efforts to tout improvements in the Florida economy out of concern it could weaken the case against Obama.
