Congress gears up for the Olympics

{mosads}Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) tweeted she is “proud that for the first time in Olympic history, every country competing in the Olympics will include women athletes.” The New York Times reported that fact Thursday after Saudi Arabia agreed, after some resistance, to send two women to compete in judo and track and field.

Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) tweeted, “Just wait until rodeo becomes an Olympic sport.”

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) tweeted a helpful link to Mashable’s “social media guide to connecting [with] your favorite athletes.” Mashable points to Facebook’s Countdown App and the verified London 2012 Olympics official Twitter list of athletes.

And Rep. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) offered her “congratulations and good luck to the five Western New Yorkers heading to the Olympics” and Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) linked to a profile of a Mississippi native who will also compete.

Others, including Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.) who called himself “outraged,” were concerned about reports that the U.S. Olympics team is using outfits made in China. Senate Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also addressed the topic on Thursday, telling reporters the committee should “burn them and start all over again.”
