The bill from House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) gives a total of $17 billion in aid, including $3.9 billion to repair local roads, utilities and publicly owned hospitals.

An additional $100 million would go to the Department of Health and Human Services to repair social service facilities and recoup equipment and other losses related to federal research studies. The Department of Veterans Affairs would receive $235 million to repair its medical facilities.

Lawmakers will also take up a variety of organizational tasks as the 113th Congress gets under way. On Monday, the Ways and Means Committee will review its rules in a logistical meeting.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has two public events this week — remarks on Tuesday at the National Action Network Martin Luther King Day Luncheon, and on Friday at a meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors.
