Boeing, Lockheed Martin submit final proposals for missile defense contract
The contract is to develop and sustain the
Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. Boeing, which is teaming up with
Northrop Grumman for its bid, has been the prime contractor for GMD. Lockheed
has partnered with Raytheon for its proposal.
{mosads}GMD is part of the U.S. missile defense system that targets intermediate
and long-range ballistic missiles.
The program sparked a contentious
debate earlier this year in the House Armed Services Committee, when House Republicans wanted to add $100 million
to its $1.2 billion budget for 2012.
