NASA: Ozone layer won’t fully recover until 2070

New research by NASA scientists reveals that while the hole in the ozone layer is stabilizing, it will take until 2070 to completely recover, the Los Angeles Times reports.

{mosads}Levels of chlorine in the atmosphere have fallen due to the Montreal Protocol treaty, which was passed two decades ago in an effort to ban chlorofluorocarbons and other compounds.

But the levels have yet to drop below the threshold for it to stabilize the ozone layer.

Although the ozone hole is not expanding, it is still too early to say it is recovering, scientists said.

“It’s not going to be a smooth ride,” Susan Strahan, a senior research scientist at NASA told the Los Angeles Times.

“There will be some bumps in the road, but overall the trend is downward.”
